Abstract

In this article, Prof. Dr. M. Azizur Rahman discusses the rapid transition of the Bangladesh economy from agriculture to industry, focusing specifically on the intense industrialization occurring in the zones surrounding Dhaka. The author highlights the continuous growth of export-oriented and labor-intensive industries along major highways, such as the Dhaka-Tangail, Dhaka-Mymensingh, and Dhaka-Narsingdi corridors. The text emphasizes that industrial development is a prerequisite for overall national development but warns that the current trend of simultaneous industrial and residential growth lacks scientific planning. Rahman argues that unplanned urbanization will significantly increase future costs for the government to acquire land and develop necessary infrastructure. He calls for the Ministry of Communication to implement a comprehensive road network plan, including expanding existing highways to 4 to 6 lanes and constructing interior road networks, to sustain industrial growth and business development.
