Abstract
Prof. Dr. M. Azizur Rahman addresses the growing drug abuse crisis in Bangladesh, noting its prevalence among teenagers, students, and both elite and slum populations. The author argues that addiction destroys the psychological and social fabric of families and renders the individual's economic contribution to society zero. He identifies unemployment, poverty, and "over-affluence" as key drivers of addiction. The article advocates for a multi-pronged approach: strengthening border security and narcotics control to stop smuggling, implementing harsh punishments for dealers (citing the models of Singapore and Malaysia), and establishing effective rehabilitation centers for addicts. Ultimately, the author emphasizes that a drug-free society requires a shift in the "whole value system" centered around family and social life.
