Distribution transformers play a crucial role in the distribution of electrical power. Their surprise breakdown causes not only power cuts but also monetary loss and decreased reliability of the system. Traditionally, transformer monitoring methods are mainly done manually and periodically, and these cannot guarantee real-time fault detection. The project intends to develop a health monitoring system for smart distribution transformers which will utilize LoRa technology. The transformers will be equipped with sensors that would monitor their parameters—temperature, oil level, voltage, and current—on a continuous basis. A microcontroller will handle the sensor data and then use the low-power long-range communication technology called LoRa for wireless transmission. The system proposed opens up the possibilities of real-time monitoring, early fault detection, reduced maintenance cost, and a conquering of the transformer’s lifespan.
